The idgames database has decades worth of maps to play through if you want exceptional maps check out the Cacowards page on the Doom wiki. I'm not going to bother with a list, there's just too many to go over. The base game is absolutely worth 5 bucks especially from a historical perspective, but you're not really just buying Doom 2. With this new GZDoom engine in mind, buying Doom II is a lot more like buying a creation engine like Garry's Mod. I really hope you can figure out how to get a file out of your install folder on Steam and drop it into a folder on your desktop. You still need to buy Doom II on Steam to get the DOOM2.WAD file that GZDoom needs as a baseline. I'm not gonna bother linking it, Google can do that for you. It's much more powerful than the classic Doom engine, and has a lot of scripting functionality classic Doom did not, so you will need it to play most modern Doom projects you have seen on social media.
That's basically a new engine that accepts Doom info and spits out something similar to what the classic engine would. Most of the Doom footage you'll see nowadays (including that very interesting "My House" mod that's getting a lot of coverage right now) is from the GZDoom source port. Ignore the hour count - nobody plays this game through Bethesda's launcher in Steam.
